In her medieval kingdom, Queen Aggravain has decreed that no couples can marry until her son, Prince Dauntless the Drab, finds a bride. Although princesses come from all over the world to win the hand of the prince, none can pass the impossible tests given to them by Queen Aggravain. When the swamp princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, arrives, her brash ways turn the kingdom upside down. This hilarious take on the classic fairytale The Princess and the Pea is sure to warm the hearts of audiences everywhere.
This was the first full-length musical by composer Mary Rodgers, and her first collaboration with lyricist Marshall Barer. She is the daughter of the great American composer Richard Rodgers. The show opened Off Broadway in 1959 and moved to Broadway later that year. The show initially ran for over 200 performances. US tours, TV specials, and revivals followed, cementing this show’s place in popular culture. It is now a staple in community theaters and schools across America.
