ABOUT

“Once on This Island” is a vibrant and heart-stirring musical set in the French Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The story unfolds through a captivating framework: a group of Caribbean peasants, who are constantly threatened by natural forces like stormy weather, gather to comfort a frightened little girl. To calm her, they recount the tale of Ti Moune, a spirited peasant girl who lives on one side of the island, a place starkly divided between the impoverished folks like her and the wealthy grands hommes who reside on the other side. When a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, crashes his car during a storm near her village, Ti Moune rescues him and nurses him back to health, falling deeply in love with him in the process.

Ti Moune’s love leads her on a poignant journey fraught with challenges and guided by the island gods, who are whimsically meddling in her affairs. Defying social boundaries, she follows Daniel back to his part of the island, only to discover that the stark realities of class and cultural differences are insurmountable obstacles to their love. Despite her sacrifices and the trials she endures, Ti Moune ultimately finds that her actions have a deeper significance than she realizes. Her story of determined love and the pain of rejection transforms into a mythic tale that questions the social divides and speaks to the resilience of the human spirit. As the story comes full circle, it is revealed that Ti Moune’s tale, passed down through generations, serves a profound purpose, teaching the young girl and the audience about hope, unity, and the transformative power of storytelling.
