ABOUT

“1776” is a compelling musical that dramatizes the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Set in Philadelphia during the sweltering summer of 1776, the story follows John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson as they strive to convince their fellow members of the Second Continental Congress to vote for independence from British rule. Amidst vehement debates, political conflict, and the challenge of uniting a divided Congress, Adams is portrayed as passionate and somewhat irascible, Franklin as witty and wise, and Jefferson as quiet yet intensely articulate. The trio works tirelessly against time and opposition to forge a consensus by July 4th.

The musical uniquely combines humor and drama, using rich, character-driven dialogue and a score that blends traditional Broadway style with period motifs. Key scenes include the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, the emotional impact of dispatches from the Continental Army, and individual moments where delegates express their fears, hopes, and convictions. As the deadline of July 4 approaches, tensions escalate and compromises must be made, notably reflected in the poignant removal of a clause condemning slavery to ensure unanimous support. The climax of “1776” is a powerful, reflective moment as each delegate slowly steps forward to sign the Declaration, culminating in the iconic Liberty Bell tableau, signifying the birth of a new nation.
