The Hunchback of Notre Dame

ABOUT

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” based on Victor Hugo’s novel, is a dramatic and emotional musical that tells the story of Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Quasimodo is confined to the cathedral by his cruel caretaker, Archdeacon Claude Frollo, who forbids him from venturing outside due to his physical deformities. Despite his isolation, Quasimodo dreams of experiencing the outside world and finds an opportunity during the Feast of Fools, a festival where he is momentarily celebrated before being humiliated by the crowd. It is during this festival that Quasimodo meets Esmeralda, a kind and free-spirited gypsy who stands up for him against the mob, sparking a profound change in him.

Esmeralda’s compassion and Quasimodo’s fascination with the outside world ignite a conflict with Frollo, who himself becomes obsessively infatuated with Esmeralda, leading to a series of tragic decisions. Frollo’s obsession and bigotry against the gypsies escalate into a vengeful crusade, endangering Esmeralda, who has also caught the attention of the gallant Captain Phoebus. As tensions rise, Quasimodo must decide whether to obey Frollo, who raised and sheltered him, or to help Esmeralda, who showed him kindness and represented the world he yearned to join. The story culminates in a dramatic confrontation at the cathedral, testing the faith and morals of all characters involved, and leaving an enduring impact on themes of acceptance and what it means to be a monster or a man.
