ABOUT
“Newsies” is a rousing musical set in New York City at the end of the 19th century, centered on the true-life events of the Newsboys Strike of 1899. The story follows Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies’, who dreams of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. However, when publishing titan Joseph Pulitzer decides to raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause worth fighting for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right, challenging powerful societal structures.
The narrative unfolds as Jack and his fellow newsies confront their oppressors with youthful zeal and the power of unity. Through their struggle, they find friendship and camaraderie, proving that even the humblest voices can echo powerful truths when they stand together. Featuring catchy songs by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, dynamic dance numbers, and a poignant look at the power of collective action, “Newsies” is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of fighting for justice.
