ABOUT
A Bronx Tale is a musical adaptation of Chazz Palminteri’s one-man show and the subsequent film of the same name. With a book by Palminteri, music by Alan Menken, and lyrics by Glenn Slater, the musical premiered on Broadway in 2016. Set in the 1960s, it tells the coming-of-age story of Calogero, a young boy from the Bronx, who is torn between the influence of his honest, hardworking father and the allure of a charismatic mob boss named Sonny. The narrative explores themes of loyalty, family, and the choices that define our lives, all against the backdrop of a vibrant and diverse Italian-American community.
The production received positive reviews for its compelling storytelling, memorable music, and strong performances. Directed by Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks, the musical successfully captures the essence of Palminteri’s original story while infusing it with the energy and emotion of a live theater performance. The songs, composed by Menken, are a blend of 1960s rock, doo-wop, and traditional Broadway melodies, which enhance the nostalgic yet timeless feel of the show. A Bronx Tale has resonated with audiences for its authentic portrayal of life’s complexities and the universal struggle to find one’s path amidst conflicting influences.
