ABOUT
Bye Bye Birdie is a classic musical set in the 1950s that satirizes American teenage culture and the frenzy of rock ‘n’ roll stardom. The story centers on Conrad Birdie, a popular Elvis-style singer who is drafted into the army. As a publicity stunt, his manager Albert Peterson and Albert’s secretary (and longtime girlfriend) Rosie Alvarez arrange for Birdie to give “one last kiss” to a randomly chosen fan before leaving. The lucky girl is Kim MacAfee, a teenager from Sweet Apple, Ohio, which sends her small town into chaos as the media descends and emotions run high.
The musical explores themes of celebrity obsession, generational conflict, and young love, all wrapped in high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs like “Put on a Happy Face,” “A Lot of Livin’ to Do,” and “Kids.” While Conrad represents the rebellious allure of rock ‘n’ roll, the real heart of the story lies in the relationships between the characters—especially Albert’s journey toward independence and commitment, and Kim’s realization about what it means to grow up. With humor and heart, Bye Bye Birdie remains a nostalgic yet sharp look at America’s mid-century pop culture.
