It’s the brassy, bright, and promising year of 1959. Boston’s Colonial Theatre is host to the opening night performance of a new musical called Robbin’ Hood of the Old West. When the untalented leading lady, Jessica Cranshaw, mysteriously dies on stage, the entire cast and crew become suspects. Enter a local detective named Frank Cioffi, who just happens to be a musical theatre fan! It’s up to him to solve the case before the show reopens without getting himself killed.
Based on the original book and concept of the same name by Peter Stone, the musical is a send-up of backstage murder mystery plots. The show had its world premiere in Los Angeles in 2006 before moving to Broadway in March of 2007. The production, directed by Scott Ellis and choreographed by Rob Ashford, received eight Tony Award nominations. It won Best Performance by a Leading Actor in A Musical for Hyde Pierce’s portrayal of Frank Cioffi – a character who critic Ben Brantley called “the best damn musical theatre character since Mama Rose in ‘Gypsy'”.
