ABOUT
South Pacific is a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical set during World War II on a remote island in the South Pacific. The story follows two parallel love stories: one between Nellie Forbush, a spunky U.S. Navy nurse from Arkansas, and Emile de Becque, a wealthy French plantation owner with a mysterious past; and the other between Lieutenant Joseph Cable and Liat, a young Tonkinese woman. As the characters navigate the challenges of love, war, and cultural differences, they are forced to confront their own prejudices and fears.
The musical explores themes of racism, love, and the cost of war, using memorable songs like “Some Enchanted Evening,” “There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame,” and “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught” to deepen the emotional impact. With its lush tropical setting and powerful message, South Pacific remains a poignant and timely reflection on humanity, courage, and the transformative power of love in the face of adversity.
