ABOUT

Summer: The Donna Summer Musical is a jukebox musical that tells the story of the legendary singer Donna Summer, following her rise to fame, personal struggles, and lasting impact on the music industry. The show is structured in a non-linear fashion, using three different actresses to portray Summer at various stages of her life: Duckling Donna, representing her early years; Disco Donna, showcasing her peak during the disco era; and Diva Donna, embodying her later years and reflections on her career. The musical weaves together over 20 of Summer’s iconic hits, including “Love to Love You Baby,” “Bad Girls,” “Hot Stuff,” and “Last Dance,” seamlessly integrating them into the narrative to highlight key moments in her journey.

The story begins with Diva Donna preparing for a performance, reflecting on her life and career. Through flashbacks, the audience is transported to Donna’s childhood, where she first discovers her love for singing in church. As she grows older, she leaves her Boston home to pursue a career in music, eventually finding success in Europe before making her breakthrough in the U.S. with Giorgio Moroder’s groundbreaking electronic disco sound. However, fame comes at a cost, as the show delves into her struggles with sexism, industry pressures, and personal challenges, including a turbulent marriage and a battle with illness. Throughout it all, Donna remains a trailblazing artist, redefining the sound of an era and leaving an indelible mark on pop music.
