The Mystery of Edwin Drood

ABOUT

The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a musical based on Charles Dickens’ final, unfinished novel of the same name. The show, with book, music, and lyrics by Rupert Holmes, is presented as a play within a play performed by a Victorian music hall troupe. The plot follows the mysterious disappearance of young Edwin Drood, with suspicion falling on a cast of colorful characters, including his opium-addicted uncle John Jasper, the mysterious Helena and Neville Landless, and the cryptic Princess Puffer. Because Dickens died before finishing the novel, the story is famously unresolved—leaving the audience to wonder: was Edwin Drood murdered, and if so, by whom?

In a clever theatrical twist, the musical invites the audience to become part of the story. After setting up the mystery, the show pauses and allows the audience to vote on key elements: who the murderer is, who the lovers are, and even whether Drood is truly dead. This interactive element means no two performances are exactly the same. Blending comedy, suspense, and music hall flair, The Mystery of Edwin Drood is both a playful homage to Victorian melodrama and a celebration of live theatre’s unpredictability.
