ABOUT
“Aida,” a musical with music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice, is a sweeping romantic story set in ancient Egypt. It revolves around Aida, a courageous Nubian princess captured by Egyptian soldiers. Despite her royal lineage, Aida becomes enslaved in Egypt, where her striking beauty and regal bearing draw the attention of Radames, the powerful and handsome Egyptian captain. Unknown to his soldiers, Radames begins to question the principles of Egyptian society, including the institution of slavery, as he falls deeply in love with Aida. This forbidden affection threatens to thwart his political ambitions, including his arranged marriage to Amneris, the Pharaoh’s daughter.
The narrative unfolds against a backdrop of looming war between Egypt and Nubia, and as the lovers struggle with their loyalties to their countries and each other, Aida and Radames must make heart-wrenching decisions. Aida faces a particularly cruel dilemma: choosing between her love for Radames and her duty to her people and family back in Nubia. Meanwhile, Amneris, who grows from a superficial princess to a wise ruler, becomes an integral part of their story, illustrating themes of growth and understanding. Ultimately, “Aida” is a tale of star-crossed lovers caught in the throes of destiny and duty, exploring themes of love, betrayal, and sacrifice, all set to a stirring score blending rock, pop, and traditional musical theater styles.
