Pirates! The Penzance Musical is a jazzy, high-energy reimagining of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic The Pirates of Penzance, adapted by Tony Award–winning writer Rupert Holmes for Theatrical Rights Worldwide (TRW). The story follows Frederic, a young man who has been mistakenly apprenticed to a band of tender-hearted pirates. When he reaches what he believes is the end of his apprenticeship, he falls in love with Mabel, the spirited daughter of Major-General Stanley, and tries to leave his pirate past behind. Unfortunately, a bizarre loophole involving his leap-year birthday means he may be bound to the pirates for decades longer, creating a hilarious conflict between love, duty, and loyalty.
This new version moves the action from Victorian-era Cornwall to 1800s New Orleans, blending the original show’s rapid-fire wordplay, comic characters, romance, and beloved patter songs with jazz, blues, Caribbean rhythms, and French Quarter flair. With a swaggering Pirate King, a tongue-twisting Major-General, a lively ensemble of pirates and police, and plenty of mistaken identities and theatrical mayhem, Pirates! combines the charm of classic musical comedy with a fresh, contemporary energy. The result is an accessible introduction to Gilbert and Sullivan for new audiences while retaining the wit and musical comedy that have made the original a perennial favorite.
