ABOUT
American Psycho: The Musical is a darkly satirical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s controversial novel, with music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik and a book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Set in the superficial, high-powered world of 1980s Manhattan, the story follows Patrick Bateman, a wealthy, image-obsessed investment banker who hides his increasingly unhinged and violent tendencies behind a mask of charm and success. As Bateman navigates a culture of greed, vanity, and consumerism, his grip on reality begins to slip, blurring the line between his brutal fantasies and actual crimes.
The musical blends pulsing electronic music with sleek staging to mirror the flashy, materialistic world it portrays, while also diving deep into themes of identity, alienation, and moral decay. Bateman’s descent is portrayed with both horror and dark humor, creating a jarring contrast between the show’s glossy exterior and the disturbing truths underneath. Through its stylized violence and biting commentary, American Psycho critiques the emptiness of modern life and the dangerous extremes of narcissism, making it both an unsettling and thought-provoking theatrical experience.
