ABOUT
Anastasia is a sweeping musical inspired by the 1997 animated film and the 1956 movie, blending historical drama with fantasy. Set in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, it follows a young amnesiac named Anya who sets out to uncover her mysterious past. Guided by two con men, Dmitry and Vlad, who hope to pass her off as the long-lost Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov for a reward, Anya’s journey takes her from the streets of St. Petersburg to the elegance of 1920s Paris. Along the way, she discovers that she may truly be the missing princess, grappling with questions of identity, family, and belonging.
With a lush score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and a book by Terrence McNally, Anastasia combines classic Broadway charm with modern sensibilities. The show weaves together romance, intrigue, and hope as Anya must decide whether to embrace her royal heritage or the new life she’s built. The musical departs from the film’s supernatural elements—replacing the villain Rasputin with the more grounded antagonist Gleb, a Soviet officer torn between duty and conscience—resulting in a more human and emotionally resonant story about finding one’s place in a rapidly changing world.
