Chicago

ABOUT

Chicago is a classic American musical that premiered on Broadway in 1975, with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and choreography by the legendary Bob Fosse. Set in the Jazz Age, the story follows Roxie Hart, a nightclub dancer who dreams of fame and becomes entangled in the seedy underbelly of Chicago’s criminal justice system after committing murder. Alongside her is Velma Kelly, a glamorous vaudevillian also facing murder charges, and the two women compete for media attention and the help of smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn. The musical explores themes of corruption, celebrity, and the fickle nature of public opinion, with a darkly comedic edge.

Known for its iconic choreography and provocative style, Chicago has enjoyed a significant cultural impact and multiple revivals, including a successful 1996 production that became the longest-running revival in Broadway history. The musical is distinct in its minimalistic set design, letting the boldness of the characters and music take center stage. Memorable numbers such as “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango,” and “Razzle Dazzle” have become standards in musical theater, and the show has inspired countless adaptations, including a 2002 film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Chicago remains a commentary on the power of sensationalism and the glamorization of crime, making it both timeless and relevant in today’s media-driven world.
