Memphis

ABOUT

Memphis, a Broadway musical, tells the story of Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ in the 1950s South, who defies racial boundaries by promoting Black music. The show takes audiences on an emotional journey as Huey becomes deeply invested in showcasing the vibrant rhythms and powerful voices of Black artists, even at great personal risk. Inspired by real-life DJ Dewey Phillips, Memphis blends history and fiction to address themes of racial tension, love, and the transformative power of music. With music by David Bryan of Bon Jovi and lyrics by Bryan and Joe DiPietro, Memphis won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2010.

The music in Memphis combines rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, and blues, capturing the raw energy and optimism of a changing era in American history. Through electrifying performances and dynamic choreography, the show brings the cultural struggles and artistic triumphs of the 1950s to life. The relationship between Huey and Felicia, an aspiring Black singer, forms the heart of the musical as they navigate the complexities of interracial romance in a racially divided world. Memphis not only celebrates the power of music to break down barriers but also sheds light on the sacrifices and courage needed to create change in the face of prejudice.
