Memphis: School Edition

ABOUT

Memphis: School Edition is a streamlined adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Memphis, crafted specifically for younger performers. Set in the 1950s, the story centers on Huey Calhoun, a white DJ with a passion for R&B music, and Felicia Farrell, an ambitious Black singer. Together, they defy racial barriers to share the power of music and love with audiences, inspiring change while facing the societal challenges of the era. The school edition retains the show’s core themes of love, race, and cultural revolution but is adapted for younger audiences, with minor adjustments to content to be age-appropriate while keeping the heart and energy of the original production.

The music, composed by David Bryan with lyrics by Joe DiPietro and Bryan, blends rock, gospel, and soul, bringing the vibrancy of 1950s Memphis to life. This edition of the show allows school performers to delve into complex themes through electrifying dance numbers, powerful solos, and dynamic ensemble pieces. With a focus on inclusivity and history, Memphis: School Edition offers students an opportunity to explore an important cultural moment, showcasing the transformative power of music and courage in confronting prejudice. The result is a performance that is both engaging and thought-provoking, making it a popular choice for high school theater programs.
