Deloris Van Cartier is an energetic lounge singer, and girlfriend to gangster Vince LaRocca. When she sees him murder somebody for allegedly squealing to the cops, she runs away and becomes disguised as a nun in a California covent. Deloris then proceeds to upend the lives of the resident sisters. To try and keep Deloris under control, the sisters make her director of the choir. The choir transforms into a soulful act that gains attention from all around.
