ABOUT
Smoke on the Mountain is a bluegrass gospel musical set in 1938 in a small town in North Carolina. The story follows the Sanders Family Singers, a traveling gospel group invited to perform at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church’s Saturday Night Sing. Led by their enthusiastic but nervous pastor, the Rev. Oglethorpe, the family shares a mix of traditional hymns, personal testimonies, and humorous anecdotes. As the evening unfolds, their heartfelt stories and struggles come to light, revealing doubts, hopes, and faith in a way that resonates with the congregation.
Featuring over two dozen gospel songs, Smoke on the Mountain blends uplifting music with rich storytelling and down-home humor. Each member of the Sanders family brings a unique personality, from the stern yet loving matriarch Vera to the rebellious but endearing June, who “signs” rather than sings. The musical celebrates faith, family, and the transformative power of music, offering both comedic and poignant moments. Its simple yet deeply engaging narrative has made it a beloved show for regional theaters and church groups alike.
