ABOUT
The Sound of Music is a classic musical that debuted on Broadway in 1959, with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The story is set in Austria in the late 1930s and follows Maria, a young woman studying to become a nun, who is sent to be the governess for the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp, a widowed naval officer. Maria brings music and joy back into the lives of the von Trapp family, and she and the Captain eventually fall in love and marry. The story is based on the real-life von Trapp family, who fled Austria during World War II to escape the Nazi regime.
The musical is renowned for its memorable songs, including “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.” The Sound of Music was later adapted into an immensely successful 1965 film starring Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp. The film went on to win five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and has become one of the most beloved musicals in cinematic history. The themes of love, family, and resilience against adversity have made The Sound of Music a timeless piece of musical theater that continues to captivate audiences around the world.
