Six-year-old Susan lives with her single mother, Doris Walker, in New York City. Doris is an accomplished businesswoman who doesn’t want her daughter’s head filled with lies. She has taken great care to explain away all fairy tales – including the “myth” of Santa Claus.
One day, as Doris is hard at work planning the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, they discover that the man assigned to play Santa is drunk. A kindly old man complains to Doris, and she persuades him to become the new Santa. His performance is a huge success, and she hires him as the full-time Santa at Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street.
Fred Gailey, Doris’s neighbor, tries to win her heart by taking Susan to see Santa Claus at Macy’s. When it turns out that the Macy’s Santa may actually be the real Kris Kringle, everything Doris has taught Susan is suddenly called into question. Speculation runs rampant in New York City, and soon Kris Kringle is on trial.
This show is based on the holiday classic of the same name. The book and score were written by Meredith Willson, who also wrote The Music Man. Filled with humor and spectacle, this heartwarming musical is pure family entertainment. It features beloved songs like “Pinecones and Hollyberries” and “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” With its built-in fanbase, Miracle on 34th Street is the perfect holiday treat for any theatre!
